It’s iconic, romantic, and full of character — perfect for couples who want something timeless but also bold and stylish. Whether you’ve been there before or it’s your first time visiting, the views and atmosphere never disappoint.

Engagement Photo Session at the Griffith Park Observatory, Los Angeles, California | NZ WEDDING STUDIO
Why Griffith Observatory is a Perfect Spot for Engagement Photos
Griffith Observatory is one of the most iconic landmarks in Los Angeles, and it’s the perfect setting for engagement photos — especially for couples who love history, views, and stylish backdrops. The building’s classic Art Deco architecture adds a timeless and elegant feel to your photos, giving them that cinematic edge. From the rooftop, you get stunning panoramic views over the entire city — it truly feels like you’re standing on top of Los Angeles. It’s especially magical during golden hour or sunset, when the light is soft, warm, and dreamy.
What makes this location even more special is the variety it offers. In one session, you can capture elegant portraits with clean architectural lines, cozy natural moments just steps away in the surrounding greenery, and wide scenic shots with the LA skyline in the background. It’s like having three unique photo spots in one: a rooftop vibe, nature trails, and a classic cityscape.
If you’re a couple looking for a photo location that’s urban, stylish, and unforgettable — but still feels intimate and personal — this place is a dream. It’s the perfect mix of modern and classic. Whether you’re dressing up or keeping it casual, the background always brings something special to every moment.

Best Times to Visit for a Photo Session
Working Hours of Griffith Observatory
Monday – Closed
Tuesday – Friday 12:00PM – 10:00PM
Saturday – Sunday 10:00AM – 10:00PM
What Days the Observatory is Closed (usually Mondays)
Since the Griffith Observatory is one of the Landmarks of Los Angeles very often during the working hours of the building there are a lot of tourists and other visitors.
My recommendations for having a photo engagement photography session is on Monday when the Observatory is closed and when it is less crowded. Unfortunately the area where the rooftop is closed during that period so would not be available to have extra shoots at the top of the building.
Weekday mornings / early afternoons are usually the least crowded times.
- Avoid weekends, especially sunset hours, because that’s when the Observatory is busiest.
- If you want to shoot interiors, exhibits, or classic architectural details without many people around, aim for weekday mid-day when it’s open but before peak hours.
When Is the Rooftop/Observation Deck Open?
The rooftop and terraces at Griffith Observatory are open every day from sunrise until 10:00 p.m., when Griffith Park closes. You can also visit the rooftop deck while the building is open, unless there’s bad weather that may cause it to close for safety.
Sunset is one of the best times to shoot here — the light is warm and beautiful, and the city views look amazing. Just be aware that it can get very crowded during that time, especially on weekends. For a quieter experience, consider going earlier in the day or on a weekday.
Griffith Park: Nature Trails and Scenic Spots for Extra Engagement Photo Variety
Griffith Observatory isn’t just an iconic LA landmark — it’s also surrounded by beautiful nature, making it a perfect spot for couples who love the outdoors.
Right around the building, you’ll find scenic trails and green spaces that offer a totally different vibe from the rooftop and architecture. Fern Dell Trail gives you a lush, woodsy feel with lots of greenery, while the West Observatory Trail opens up to wide views and soft natural light. Just behind the Observatory, there’s a cactus garden with a stunning LA skyline in the background, and the nearby Griffith Park hills are perfect for golden hour shots with a warm, desert look.
If you explore a bit more, you’ll find hidden park corners and high hilltops that offer incredible views of Downtown LA, the Hollywood sign, and the full cityscape — all wrapped in natural surroundings. This location is ideal if you’re a couple looking to combine urban style, historic architecture, and natural beauty all in one engagement session.
And of course, big credit goes to my girlfriend Katarina, who helped by holding the bag with the ring and setting up external light. Without her, everything would have been much harder to pull off so smoothly.
Parking Tips & Access Info
If you’re planning Griffith Observatory engagement photos, getting there early is the secret to a smooth experience. The Observatory has its own parking lot right next to the building, making access super easy.

Free Parking Hours:

Pro Tip: Arrive early! If you come before these times, you can park anywhere around the loop for free — no payment or permits needed.

What to Wear for a Session at Griffith Observatory
For engagement photos at Griffith Observatory, the best outfits are the ones that feel like you — but also complement the location’s colors and textures. Think timeless, clean, and a little elevated.
Classic LA Look:
Soft neutrals like beige, white, light brown, rust, or dusty blue look amazing against the Observatory’s white Art Deco architecture and the warm tones of the surrounding hills.
Want a Pop of Color?
Try jewel tones such as deep green or burgundy — they stand out beautifully while still keeping that elegant, romantic vibe.
Since this location offers both urban and natural vibes, you might want to bring two looks: one dressier for rooftop and landmark shots, and one more relaxed for the nature trails. Comfortable shoes are key — especially if you plan to explore the dirt paths, cactus garden, or hilly viewpoints. Bring stylish sneakers, boots, or block-heeled shoes that can handle a bit of walking without sacrificing your look. And don’t forget: bring layers! The temperature can drop fast after sunset, especially if you’re shooting golden hour into blue hour.
Final Tips from a Los Angeles Photographer
If you’re thinking about doing your engagement session at Griffith Observatory, you’re making a great choice. It has everything — views, nature, and a classic LA vibe.
My advice? Come early, plan around the light, and wear something you feel confident in. Bring comfy shoes if you want to explore the trails. And don’t stress — just enjoy the moment.
Before every session, I always tell my couples: have fun, be yourselves, and trust the process. The best photos come when you’re relaxed and just enjoying each other.
