Point Dume Malibu Proposal Photography | Engagement Photographer

Southern California is one of the best places in the world for weddings, engagement and proposals photo sessions — and it’s easy to see why. The variety of landscapes here is incredible. Within a short drive you can go from the ocean to the mountains to the desert.

Not many places in the world can offer that kind of natural diversity, and it’s exactly what makes the Point Dume area so special for proposal or engagement photography.

Why Choose Point Dume for a Proposal

Point Dume in Malibu is one of my favorite spots for proposals and engagement photo sessions in Los Angeles. It has a little bit of everything: dramatic cliffs, golden sandy beaches, and the Pacific Ocean stretching out endlessly behind you. For couples, it means your photos will have depth and variety without even leaving the location. For me as a photographer, it’s the perfect setting to create a story that feels both natural and cinematic.

If you’re looking for a place that combines beauty, romance, and a touch of adventure, Point Dume really has it all. It’s easily one of the best locations in the Los Angeles area for capturing unforgettable engagement or proposal photos.

Stunning cliffs and panoramic ocean views and beach around the corner!

When couples choose a location for their photo session, the goal is often to get as much variety as possible without having to move around too much. That’s exactly what makes Point Dume so special — it feels like three locations in one.

There’s a beautiful trail surrounded by nature, cliffs with incredible ocean views, and a sandy beach right below. All of this is within walking distance, which means in just one session you can capture a diverse collection of photos with completely different backdrops. It keeps your gallery fresh, creative, and full of variety — all from one spot.

The best part? Everything is close by. You don’t have to think about logistics or driving between multiple places. Just bring your smile, and with the right photographer, the rest will fall into place.

Secluded atmosphere for intimate moments!

Another great thing about Point Dume is that it’s never overcrowded. Located about 15 miles from Santa Monica and a bit further from Los Angeles, it doesn’t get the same heavy tourist traffic as some of the more popular LA beaches. For many couples, this makes it a hidden gem.

Photographing your engagement, proposal, or elopement here often feels peaceful and private. The quieter atmosphere allows you to relax, be yourself, and enjoy intimate moments without feeling rushed or distracted. That sense of calm always shows in the photos — your smiles look more natural, your body language is more comfortable, and the emotions feel real.

Of course, you may see a few people walking by, but it’s nothing compared to busier locations like Griffith Observatory, Santa Monica Pier, or even El Matador Beach, where you often have to wait your turn and compete with crowds. At Point Dume, you don’t need to worry about strangers stepping into your frame or other couples lining up in the same spot. Instead, you get the luxury of space, time, and the freedom to focus only on each other — which makes all the difference in capturing timeless photos.

About Betty & Dylan Proposal Session at Point Dume

I had the pleasure of being hired by Dylan to capture his proposal to Betty — which made the day even more special because it happened on her birthday. From the very beginning, Dylan wanted everything to be perfect and a complete surprise. We had several Zoom calls and phone meetings leading up to the big day, carefully planning every detail so that Betty wouldn’t suspect a thing.

What made this proposal unique was how much thought Dylan put into keeping it natural and effortless. We discussed different ways to blend the photoshoot into the day, so it would feel casual to Betty — just like a birthday outing — but still give us the perfect setup for that once-in-a-lifetime moment. Every small decision, from timing to location details, was chosen with her in mind.

By the time the proposal finally happened, everything fell into place beautifully. Dylan’s planning paid off, and Betty was completely surprised — her reaction was pure joy and full of emotion. Moments like these are why I love proposal photography: the mix of anticipation, excitement, and raw happiness all wrapped into one unforgettable story.

The Couple’s Story: The Proposal and Her Reaction

We arranged to meet at the bottom of Point Dume. Dylan told Betty that he had organized a photoshoot for her birthday, which was supposed to happen right after the session. She had no idea what was coming. We started next to the big stairs that lead down to one of the beaches surrounding Point Dume.

apturing pure joy: proposal and surprise at Point Dume, California.

To keep everything natural, I began the session with a few casual couple portraits, just to relax them both. The plan was simple: we would take about 30 minutes of “regular” photos so Betty truly believed this was just a birthday photoshoot. Then, once we made it up to the top of the hill, I would discreetly take the ring from Dylan’s bag and hand it to him during a posing setup, so he could surprise her.

As I do before every shoot, I had already scouted all the best spots around Point Dume to make sure we didn’t waste time. For the proposal itself, I chose the cliffside at the top. From there, the views are breathtaking — sweeping ocean on one side, dramatic cliffs and hills on the other. It’s one of those places that makes any moment feel bigger than life.

Everything went exactly as we planned. When Dylan got down on one knee, Betty’s reaction was priceless — she was shocked, overwhelmed, and full of joy. She covered her face, laughed, cried, and hugged him tightly all within seconds. That mix of surprise and pure happiness is something I see often during proposals, and it’s always different but equally powerful. Some people are completely speechless, some burst into tears, and others can’t stop smiling and laughing. What they all share is that raw, unfiltered emotion that you just can’t stage or fake — and those moments are always my favorite to capture.

And of course, big credit goes to my girlfriend Katarina, who helped by holding the bag with the ring and setting up external light. Without her, everything would have been much harder to pull off so smoothly.

Favorite candid and emotional moments!

It was such a joy working with Betty and Dylan. They were both so open and natural in front of the camera, which made my job incredibly easy. With just a little direction, most of their portraits turned out candid, effortless, and full of genuine connection.

Of course, the highlight of the session was the exact moment when Betty realized Dylan was proposing. Her reaction was raw and emotional — a perfect mix of surprise, joy, and love. From a photography perspective, it was everything I love: completely unposed, pure documentary, nothing staged or directed. Just two people experiencing one of the biggest moments of their lives. Capturing that authenticity was an honor, and it’s the kind of memory I’ll always enjoy looking back on as a photographer.

After the proposal, Betty and Dylan took about 5–10 minutes to let the emotions sink in and enjoy the moment together. Once they were ready, we walked down to the beach right next to Point Dume to finish their session. The timing couldn’t have been better — the sun was setting, painting the sky in golden tones, while the waves rolled gently onto the bright white sand.

Surrounded by cliffs and rocks, it created the perfect romantic backdrop to wrap up their proposal story. The photos we captured there were calm, intimate, and full of warmth — a beautiful way to end such an unforgettable day.

Tips for Planning a Proposal at Point Dume

Best time of day (sunset glow works beautifully)

I always recommend that couples schedule their photo sessions — whether it’s a wedding, engagement, proposal, or elopement — during sunrise or sunset. These times of day give the most beautiful natural light, often called the “golden hour.”

  • Early morning sessions (right after sunrise) create soft, fresh light with fewer people around, which makes it perfect for couples who want a quiet and intimate atmosphere.

  • Sunset sessions, ideally starting about two hours before the sun goes down, bring warm, glowing tones that add romance and depth to every photo. Both options make a huge difference in creating natural, flattering, and timeless images.

What to wear for coastal engagement photos

When choosing outfits for your photo session, I always suggest keeping it simple and timeless. Clothes without large logos, bold prints, or fluorescent colors work best — those details can be distracting in photos.

Neutrals & Earth Tones – White, beige, cream, tan, blush, sage green, dusty blue. These photographs are beautiful, especially outdoors (beach, mountains, parks).

  • Soft Pastels – Light pink, lavender, powder blue, peach. Perfect for a romantic, airy vibe.

  • Rich Jewel Tones – Emerald, burgundy, navy, mustard. Amazing for fall/winter sessions or evening shoots.

  • Avoid Neon & Very Bright Colors – They reflect light on skin and can be distracting in photos.

  • Coordinate, Don’t Match – Choose colors that complement each other (e.g., one wears navy, the other soft beige). Avoid identical outfits unless you want a very styled look.

Accessibility and things to know before you arrive

There are a few free parking spots available on the side streets nearby, about a 10-minute walk from the entrance of the park.

If you want to park closer, there’s also a small parking lot right next to the park, but it only fits about 15 cars and is usually full.

Do You Need a Photography Permit?

  • Brief note: Commercial/professional sessions require a FilmLA permit + photography insurance

  • Private proposals don’t usually require permits, but best to check

Engagement Photography in Malibu

Malibu is one of the most sought-after destinations for couples who want unforgettable engagement or proposal photos. Beyond Point Dume, there are several nearby locations that add even more variety and beauty to your session.

El Matador Beach

Known for its dramatic sea caves, rock formations, and golden sunsets, El Matador Beach is one of Malibu’s most iconic photo spots. It’s a favorite for couples who want a mix of romance and adventure. The unique textures of the cliffs and the natural arches make every shot look cinematic.

Malibu Pier

For a more classic California vibe, Malibu Pier is another wonderful option. With its long wooden boardwalk stretching into the ocean, it offers both coastal charm and sweeping views of the Pacific. It’s also close to restaurants and shops, making it a fun spot for couples who want to celebrate after their session.

Whether you’re dreaming of rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, or the charm of a historic pier, Malibu has endless backdrops for engagement photography. Many couples even choose to combine two nearby locations — like Point Dume and El Matador Beach — for a single session filled with diverse and romantic images.
